Our History

Thomas Stockwell Simms founded the Simms Company in 1866. As an American Civil War Veteran, he put his soldiers’ bonus and back pay in a modest brush and broom company in Portland, Maine. In 1872, this start-up business relocated to Saint John, New Brunswick. This port destination became well regarded for its shipbuilding participation and famous all over the world.

Thomas Simms underwent many tribulations but persisted with a number of talents. Unfortunately, he tragically lost two wives in addition to an awful factory fire. He continued to strive forward despite these disasters and forged his organization ahead.

Simms preferred to travel and visited China in the 1900s. He became one of the initial brush manufacturers to make agreements to purchase his bristles directly. He was involved with the lay missionary movement. Based in India, the Simms Memorial Baptist Church displays his commitment to his substantial efforts.

Lewis Wesley Simms

After his dad passed in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took over as head of the enterprise. For the next 50 years, he worked as President. His positive personality and commanding presence made him a dominant leader. He expanded the company his father began from regional to countrywide. Lewis Simms transformed the brush-creation industry by automating it and endorsing it. Lewis Simms excelled in the Canadian business arena and found national popularity. He was notably the president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce along with the Canadian Manufacturing Association.

LW Simms was posthumously awarded with a Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association’s Industry Hall of Fame along with the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame. Simms was really a visionary and a master of employee relations. His organized and effective approach allowed the business to flourish into the success it is today.

Thomas Stockwell Simms III, the great-grandson of the founder, maintained the traditions of integrity and high-quality that the corporation was founded on. With state-of-the-art technology, innovative products, eye-catching merchandise, impressive management and an seasoned and vivacious workforce, the corporation remains focused on exceeding expectations.
