Hanging your wallpaper is easy when you have superior instructions to follow. Are you ready to improve your space?

If wallpaper is a new undertaking for you, be sure to select your type carefully by reading the different kinds at the store. Depending on which kind you select, there may be some varied installation options. Pre-pasted wallpaper possesses a dry paste that is already attached to the back of the paper. This kind relies on water to activate the paste and unpasted types demand a separate wet paste application.. The method for installing is generally the same; however, the guidelines can slightly vary so read carefully.

These four simple steps will help you with any wallpaper application: Measure, Cut, Activate with water or paste and lastly, hang.

Wall Preparation

Prior to getting started, clear your workspace and the surface area. Make certain all electrical outlets are powered down and take away any wall fixtures. Properly clean and organize wall surfaces by removing paste residue and preceding wallpaper. TSP and alternative wall cleaners are a good idea.

Depend on a premixed universal primer specific for wallpaper to make sure your surface is prepared. Priming the wall is a crucial step when you are installing unpasted wallpaper given it allows easier removal of the wallpaper later.

Measure & Activate the Paper

The length of the wall is your initial measurement. Once you have that measurement, add four inches and next cut the wallpaper. You want the paper to overlap the ceiling and the baseboard by roughly 2 inches.

Take pattern matching into account via straight across, drop match, or random.

If hanging unpasted wallpaper…

With unpasted wallpaper, you can apply the paste to the wall structure or to the wallpaper itself. If pasting the wall, apply the paste smoothly to the wall, covering a space for one strip only. If pasting the wallpaper, apply an even coating of paste to the rear of the wallpaper, working from the centre to the edges. Next, carefully fold the pasted sides of the moistened strip together with each other and allow them to rest for three minutes. This process is called booking.

Experiment to ascertain if you prefer pasting unpasted variations by applying the paste to the paper or the wall. Be sure to only paste one area of the wall at a time if you are pasting the wall. When you're applying paste to the wall, just paste one segment at a time. If you are applying the paste to the paper, put an even coat of paste on the wallpaper backing. Start in the middle of the wallpaper and work to the outside edges. Carefully and loosely fold the moistened wallpaper strip positioning pasted sides together in a method known as “booking.” Enable the booking aka folded wallpaper to stay in this manner for 3 minutes.

If you're hanging heavier wallpapers that contain embroidery, cork, or flock within their design, choose a heavyweight clear, stain-free pre-mixed paste to handle the surplus weight instead of a light-to-medium product.

When hanging pre-pasted wallpaper…

Roll your cut strip loosely and get the patterned side facing inward and the pasted side to the outside. Then place the rolled strip for 30 seconds into warm water to allow the paste to activate. You may also rely on a wallpaper hand sprayer that emits a fine water mist to activate the pasted piece.

If you utilize the hand sprayer, spray in prolonged strokes that are the length of the paper to fully moisten the back of the strip. Concentrate on the edges for even application. Have the pasted sides together by folding each portion of the strip toward the center. Ensure the edges don’t dry out by precisely aligning the sides. Carefully roll the strip much like a rolled newspaper and enable it to rest for three minutes. This booking action allows the paste to become totally activated and the wallpaper backing to relax and become more flexible.

Hanging your first strip

As soon as the booking is finished, bring your strip to the wall. Carefully unfold the product and hang it. The paper can suspend over the baseboard and also the ceiling. Carefully press out any air bubbles by using a smoothing brush, a broad knife, or a plastic smoother. Ensure the piece has adequate connection with the wall by pressing on the wallpaper. Don’t distort or stretch the wallpaper. Lightly compress seams with a seam roller.

Proceeding to the second strip

If you are butting the second strip up to the first, position the second strip of wallpaper to the side of the first strip. Easily press the wallpaper firmly. Get rid of any residual paste by cleansing the ceiling as well as the baseboard after. You would like your seams to achieve a tight fit vertically. Ensure there are no air bubbles in the paste.

Upon installing a few wallpaper pieces and getting rid of any excess paste, take a step back and analyze your work. Notice the pattern consistency and the color harmonizing. If you are satisfied, keep installing three panels each time and checking them after. You might require added time to match up geometrical designs or complex patterns. They will often need more selvage trimming to generate color matching at the seams. When your eyes and arms are tired, take a break and have some rest. Never rush a wallpaper assignment. Displaying your strips in this technique will allow you to achieve uniform results. After all panels have been installed, carefully cut following the ceiling and the baseboards. Use a razor knife plus a guide to slowly get rid of the excess without tearing.
